Many of you sure have heard about Jabber: an Open, Standard, Proven, Decentralized, Secure, Extensible, Flexible and Diverse set of streaming XML protocols and technologies that enable any two entities on the Internet to exchange messages, presence, and other structured information in close to real time. The first Jabber application is an instant messaging (IM) network that offers functionality similar to legacy IM services such as AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo.
Maybe it could an interesting way to implement the messaging/chat side of eMule. More info at: Main site: http://www.jabber.org/ Developers site: http://www.jabberstudio.org/ This post has been edited by Beltxo: Aug 24 2005, 10:18 |

Yep, I know that there is a lot of Jabber clients. I was not talking about adding jabber to emule, I was talking just about to drop the messages and irc functionality and change it for jabber.
Pure XML, almost real-time messaging,... easy, reliable,... |

jabber is just the rules, the protocol which is open,we can use it to set up our own messaging system in it.. since the current doesn't seems to work that good

That's it!!! We could have a truly working messaging system within eMulePlus, instead of those two [in my opinion] useless modules: - Messaging: I've only had success once trying to talk to a friend. Lots of timeouts and so. - Irc: not an standard client, so it isn't allowed to connect to most of the IRC nets. The jabber way sure help us to communicate other users of eMule the right way. |

it will cut up the compatibility with other eMule/eDonkey programs ...
but the eMule messaging system doesn't work well so it could be a good idea ... and perhaps if we make a good implementation of a new messaging system other mods will follow us ... |

Well, for sure v2 won't have any integrated messaging and v1 line won't be updated so is pointless to ask for this feature. You can make an extension to v2 or find someone who want to when it's finished anyway.

so dongato, we won't have any extra features in the gui of v2? I thought we where developing it to be an eye candy and well featurepacked mod, otherwise it's not emuleplus but emule-less
or am I wrong here? Jabber is a good protocol to have besides the normal ed2k business. It could be a good replacement for ed2ks own messaging system since it just does NOT work, tested with syrus and some others of this team and no or a very rare amount of messages passed... we are building a totally new emule client, compatibility? OK! but we can extend the gui part with this jabber function... oh and about IRC, it's accepted on all networks as far as I've tested.. and it still is for support, you can join an #emule+ channel easily on the standard IRC network (freshirc.de) to ask questions, it's a more direct and faster aproach as this forum, some tend to forget the reason IRC was put in.. well this is it you know how slow this forum can be if you're in little time.... |

v2 is meant to change that. Only features related to p2p will be added to the official GUI. Most other features (Scheduler, IRC, Messaging) will be available as external plug-ins and maybe done by other people willing to maintain them.
But this is not to be discussed here. |

Some months later...
We keep on v1, v2 looks a bit far in the future, and this feature request wasn't even added to the "requested features list" for v1. Any info, opinion, flaming... about it? I still think that Jabber could make [messaging/IRC] of e+ really interesting and useful. |

V2 still looks far in the future, and today is the day of gTalk (http://talk.google.com), based on Jabber...
Maybe today is the day to revive this topic. I still find useless the actual IRC and messaging features of ePlus. |

Some people might find useless Jabber support.
