Hi, I keep getting booted off the network. Apparently this is due to my router not being able to handle UDP traffic too well. Well anyway this is a little surprising as it is quite a good router based on a well proven Conexant chipset - with a very wide variety of features.

Unfortunately there are so many features I'm not entirely sure what is best to ensure that I get the optimum performance from my emule client.

I have been told that in order to get emule to work effectively I have to open up ports 4662 and 4672 - but I am not at all sure how to do that.

The closest thing I could find in my router configuration settings was something called 'Virtual Server Configuration'.

The options it gives me are as follows:

CODE
Use the following form to add special port that you want to be opened for your special application "

ID :

Public Port :

Private Port :

Port Type: UDP/TCP?

Host IP Address:

Add this setting,

Number of Virtual Servers 0

Settings need to be saved to Flash and the system needs to be rebooted for changes to take effect.

Is this what I should be looking at? And if so what is the correct setting for my public port and my private port - and what should I write for the host IP address?

Best regards,

GJ

Yes, that's correct -- for public & private port put the same value (eMule's TCP or UDP port), Host IP Address -- IP of your PC (inside LAN).

For example:
Router's IP is 192.168.0.1
Your PC's IP: 192.168.0.10
eMule's UDP port is set up to 4662

Then the settings for this rule will be:
Public Port : 4662
Private Port :4662
Protocol : UDP
Host IP Addres: 192.168.0.10

Thanks man. The Thing is that my IP address on my nic (the one that connects to the net) is 10.0.0.2. However my ISP assigns my internet address through DHCP. How would this work when telling my router to define a host IP address for Emule - or have I got the whole things somewhat confused?

Ok, lets clear up the things:
1) Router has 2 IP adresses: one "external"/global (used to identify you on Internet/ISP) and second is "internal"/local (used to identify router inside _your_ LAN -- you need to be connected to this IP address in order to have access to Internet). Global (Public) IP address is assigned to you (your router) by ISP (through DHCP) and can be static or dynamic (it does not matter actually). Local (Private) IP address of your router is static (and you can change it, if you want to).
2) Your IP adress (your NIC's, your PC's) also can be static (you define it manually in NIC's properties) or dynamic (router assigns it to you through DHCP). Here is the "main point" -- if you want to have port forwarding IP address of your NIC must stay the same. This can be achieved by making this IP static by:
* manually defining IP in NIC/Conection properties OR
* configuring router (IP reservation) -- so even if you still obtain IP automatically through routers DHCP server, every time it will be the same (read router's manual).

Now, "Host IP Addres" must be equal to your NIC's IP.

If you don't now your NIC's IP address then run ipconfig /all from command prompt (Start->Run->cmd->ENTER)

Lol well I'm not going to pretend I completely get this yet.

Maybe I'm a dumbass but...

Lets say I take an example.

I have never been able to get my Xbox on the internet. (unrelated I know, but I think it kind of is significant for what's being said here).

I have the Xbox IP address set to 'Static.'
I have it's IP set as 10.0.0.16
I have it's Subnet mask set to 255.0.0.0
DHCP address pool selection is set to Automatic
DHCP gateway selection is set to Automatic
DHCP client is set to disabled.

Now I know your probably going to want to shoot me for asking about an Xbox config on an emule forum - but really I would like to be able to install Xmule on my Xbox in Linux anyway - so it is kind of related. But why is it no matter what I do I can't get my Xbox to ping anything on the net? I can FTP into it no probs, but doing anything on the net is no go.

An odd one I know, but if you can help me understand this I think maybe I could get a better grasp of this whole networking thing.

easy laugh.gif specify the gateway-ip and set it to the lan-ip of router (?10.0.0.1?)
to findout your routerip u can also run a "tracert www.google.com" and pick the ip from the first hop.

rolleyes.gif did u manage to forward the ports to 10.0.0.2 already?

Yes I tried that - I also tried changing my client port to 5773 and my UDP in edonkey to: 5783 after seeing a guy who gave his configuration on the Emule forums and showed screenshots of about 10 downloads all of which were maxed out. Despite trying this I am still getting lots of "Your 5773 port is not reachable. Please review your network config." type messages. (The same happens if I set the client port and public port to 4662 in both my router and edonkey).

Could someone please look at my configuration and tell me what I should do to make sure I have a good consistent connection for Emule.

My Emule configuration is as follows:

http://img74.photobucket.com/albums/v226/r...rrent=Snap8.jpg

Its a slideshow, so just click the first photo to move on to the next one and then the last one to return to the first.

And just in case anyone is interested in helping me figure out how to get my Xbox/Xmule on the net. Here is my Xbox config:

CODE
SetupNetwork = Yes
StaticIP = Yes
Ip  = 10.0.0.15
Subnetmask = 255.0.0.0
Defaultgateway = 10.0.0.2
DNS1  = 0.0.0.0
DNS2  = 0.0.0.0
SetupDelay = 0
SkipIfNoLink = No

At the moment all my client really does is just just sit there for days on end rarely downloading anything at all.

I have two objectives: 1)Get My Emule client up and running and downloading files consistently. 2) Get my Xbox connected to the internet so I can install Xmule as a 24/7 client. (I have over 200GB of files on my Xbox to share - so it would make a nice contribution to the network).

I have had no luck with either of these so far.

Bump... Please can anyone answer this?

Never mind the Xbox thing, just getting emule working reliably would be a major plus.

Any tips at all would be useful.
