Windows Locks up

After using em+ 1.1f for a while (say 3-5 minutes), Windows kinda locks up (but does not freeze) and the only applications I can run are emule and a small chess program. When I click on say, Deer Park Alpha 2 or MSN Messenger, nothing happens. Please not that Windows looks and runs fluid; it is just that I am not able to start any application. At first I thought it was a resource hogging problem, but I checked task manager and em+ takes only 16% of CPU on average and 34MB RAM. I can start Windows Explorer, but when I click on an http link (say google, on the links bar), it just stays on "finding site www.google.com...". As soon as I close em+, all the applications which I had tried to start (and failed) when em+ was running, start at once. This is really weird. Please help! Sometimes I get the message: Server Busy This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem. There are three buttons; 'Switch To', 'Retry' and 'Cancel' (grayed out). Clicking on 'Switch To' just opens the Start Menu. and nothing happens. I have to exit EM+ to make Windows get back to normal. Here is a screenshot of my connection settings. |

Try patching tcpip.sys. Go to http://www.xp-antispy.org/, download the latest version, install, and run the patch under 'special'. Increase the limit to 50 or more.

Have you scanned your PC for possible virus??
Also, unless you up-/download from other clients on LAN, tehre is no need to enable LanCast, but that is just a sidenote.. |

yeah... no viruses nor spyware found on my PC with latest definitions. Thanks for the info about LanCast. I thought that since I am behind a router, I have to enable LanCast. I'll disable it.

Are you loading any drivers for hardware that no longer is plugged into the computer?
E.g. Changed NIC, GFX card etc... |

Maybe you're hitting the router's 256 connection limit.

Stick with the settings I gave you. Change them back AFTER the problem is fixed.

OK... changing back to 200/20.
Please note that other Windows applications remain responsive as long as there are no downloads (I'm connected to a server alright and queued)... as soon as my downloads start and reach about 15-odd kbps, the problems start. This post has been edited by zeke: Sep 3 2005, 04:47 |

I have narrowed down the problem to one of McAfee's softwares; I have McAfee Internet Secutiry installed (VirusScan, Personal Firewall and Privacy Service - no SpamKiller) and when I disabled all the 3 components one by one and quit the suite, the problem went away. I have been running emule for 8 hours straight now and it hasn't pulled any crap on me yet.
