Full Version: Kad, MetaMachine and ed2k server software

Hi,

MetaMachine had withdrawn the original ed2k client. But there haven't been any news about the server software. In short terms MetaMachine still owns the code and all rights dealing the server software.

Possible scenario:
MetaMachine or some successor withdraws the server software and prosecutes everyone who's running the software without license. It has been free up to know but the owner of the rights could change this.

What about the future of eMule Plus which relies on serverbased connection to the network of ed2k/eMule?

I think for initial start original eMule needs a server anyway even if it is connecting only to Kad.

No, AFAIK oMule doesn't need servers at all. You can disable server connection. Anyway, the server code was handled to lugdunum ages ago by metamachine (they didn't update it anymore and didn't care as they were projecting to force people to use Overnet). There is another server code out there IIRC, but has a lot less features and is not as optimized as the other one.

Bottom line, we have other issues to handle (unicode, protocol update, search, etc) before handling something most of the team don't like. Of course, the death of all servers out there might change priorities but I don't see that near at all.

oMule just needs a node list to use kademlia without connecting to any server

the other server is called eFarm IIRC

Correct....

The very first time you use oMule, need to connect to a server to find sources you can bootstrap KAD from...

Or you need to know the IP/port of someone running with KAD enabled..

Lugdunum made a statement on the official eMule forum:

http://forum.emule-project.net/index.php?s...ndpost&p=810507

Looks like the server code is safe unless someone sues Lugdunum for programming the server software.
