i downloaded some software. i got a exe file and a slon.nfo file.i scaned these files before i ran them. when i ran the exe file and got a screen saying something about a black box i closed the file. too late. the slon file was a page loaded with gibberish. my computer rebooted by itself and now my virus program wont load along with other programs. cant boot in safe mode, cant restore. luckily i have my whole system backed up. been using emule for a couple of years and have not had a problem. has anybody else heard of this virus?

Probably a rootkit based virus. Very nasty things indeed. You'll find some help at majorgeeks.com and bleepingcomputer.com.
http://www.pandasecurity.com has a decent online scanner.

I keep telling everyone not to download stuff except what has been released and verified by a reputed ed2k release site, but eventually we let our guard down and download something untrustworthy. I can't adopt a holier than thou attitude for I too have been guilty of this same monumental stupidity. wallbash.gif

thank you for your reply
this has happened to me twice since i changed from avg free to nod32. is it a coincidence?
can you tell me how to get to the reputed ed2k release site?
is there a antivirus feature in emule? if so where?

There is no inherent anti virus feature in eMule Plus (or any other eMule, AFAIK) but there is an option to scan files after they complete using the anti virus that you have installed (preferences> advanced> security). Not much use if your anti virus isn't up to the task. wink.gif

i have nod32. its one of the best. i scanned both downloads that wiped out my computer.
first when it was a zip file and then after extraction. guess the virus doesn't initiate till you run the exe file.

muleteer,
please excuse my ignorance but how do i know when i am downloading from a ed2k release site.
muleteer
You go to the ed2k release web site, find the file that you want to download and click the ed2k link posted there.

If clicking the link doesn't work, check preferences> general> general: ed2k links, or simply copy the ed2k link on the web site and paste it into the box on the search page and press the 'enter' key.
